Issue Date:[2018-12-19]

Shanghai, 19th December, 2018 - The 2018 Firefly Charity Night organised by the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation - BEA Charity Fund (the “BEA Charity Fund”) concluded in great success today at the Okura Garden Hotel in Shanghai. Testament to the staunch support for the BEA Charity Fund by a broad section of society, including Olympic boxing champion Mr. Zou Shiming and his wife, charity-conscious entrepreneurs and individuals who came together in support of children’s education in rural areas. This is the tenth year that the Firefly Charity Night has been held. Funds raised will be used to continue improving educational conditions for rural children.

Mr. Cartier Lam Chi-man, Executive Director & Chief Executive of BEA China, noted that “for nine years, the BEA Charity Fund has achieved great success.  The expanding scope and depth of core projects such as the Firefly Project have not only improved the teaching hardware in rural schools; they have also brought in high-quality soft resources such as teachers and courses, benefiting tens of thousands of children in rural areas. We are highly grateful to each volunteer and charity partner for their support. In the future, we will continue to work with partners from all walks of life to explore and extend our projects to help more people. I believe that the power of love will take us further.”

At the charity dinner, guests from a broad cross-section of society gathered together to the fruits of their charity work, and to raise funds for the education and growth of children in remote rural areas. The charity auction of the night featured many exquisite items including paintings, works of art, and luxury watches as well as a BEA China credit card with lucky numbers, which caught the attention of the guests, who participated with great enthusiasm, and ensured the fundraising was a great success. At the event venue, a special life-size model of a Firefly Centre was erected, allowing guests to appreciate how their individual charitable contributions have accumulated to transform the lives of rural children. Firefly Centres have now been built in remote schools in 25 provinces and municipalities throughout the country.

The 2018 Firefly Charity Night raised funds of RMB8.47 million. As of the time of writing, the BEA Charity Fund has raised RMB82.33 million in total. As the first charity fund established by a foreign bank in Mainland China in 2009, the BEA Charity Fund has long been committed to improving youth education in rural areas. All funds raised will go towards the three main programmes of the Charity Fund - the Firefly Project, the BEA University Scholarship Programme and the Funding Plan for Non-governmental Organisations.
