BEA Charity Fund NGO Show Helps Recruit Teachers for Rural Schools
Issue Date:[2017-07-06]

Shanghai, 6th July, 2017— The grand final of the 2017 “NGO Show • One-Year Teaching Programme”, an event jointly organised by the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation - BEA Charity Fund (“BEA Charity Fund”) and China Business News (“CBN”), one of China’s leading financial media outlets, was successfully held in Shanghai today. The “One-Year Teaching Programme” developed out of the “NGO Show” which was founded last year. The programme aims to recruit the best-qualified teachers from all over China and bring them to teach in remote rural areas. This in turn means charity will reach more of those in need. In addition to fully covering volunteers’ expenses for the year, the programme provides extensive support, including specialist training, teaching assistance, a “Dream Fund” offering research and other grants, and help with finding career opportunities after the completion of the programme. All of these measures will give greater numbers of highly driven young people the courage to engage in charity work.

A jury composed of Mr. Cartier Lam Chi-man, Executive Director & Chief Executive of BEA China; Mr. Zhou Jiangong, Chief Executive Officer of CBN; Mr. Yang Ye, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation; Ms. Xia Xiaojuan, Vice-Principal of Shanghai Fu Dan High School; Mr. Zhang Yang, Chairman & Secretary General of Burgeon Public Service; and other senior charity experts evaluated the competitors’ performance in six areas, namely personal competence, values, communication ability, learning ability, leadership and ability to work under pressure. The jury also delivered feedback to the competitors.

Mr. Cartier Lam Chi-man, Executive Director & Chief Executive of BEA China, noted that “The BEA Charity Fund has always endeavoured to aid children and teenagers’ education and growth. Our years of experience in public service have drawn our attention to the unequal distribution of educational resources across rural areas, so we hope to integrate resources from both enterprises and charity organisations to improve rural education through the 2017 NGO Show • One-Year Teaching Programme. At the same time, the tremendous love our volunteer teachers have for children and teenagers, and their willingness to leave city life behind for a year, are truly admirable. We will also provide effective support for those who finish their period of teaching to help them return to the workplace.”

It has been reported that after the call for applications in May 2017, the “NGO Show • One-Year Teaching Programme” became the focus of attention from all of society and received hundreds of applications. Finally, 16 excellent volunteers made the shortlist after a three part application process involving review of their resumes, a telephone interview, and a second interview in person. The competition at the final level was fierce and full of surprises. In the “My Story” round, the volunteer candidates demonstrated their talents in every possible way. During the rapid-fire “Fingers on Buzzers” round, they demonstrated their extensive knowledge, and their perseverance in the pursuit of their dreams. The “pressure test” put the candidates on the spot as a panel of experts asked them questions concerning, among other areas, the sort of thorny problems and difficulties that volunteer teachers may encounter in real life. The pressure test was therefore a means to examine the contestants’ ability to think on their feet and to remain calm under pressure. In the end, 8 contestants received the top prize, becoming official members of the 2017 “NGO Show • One-Year Teaching Programme”, while the remaining participants were presented with an “Award for Charitable Spirit”.

BEA Charity Fund NGO Show was established by the BEA Charity Fund and CBN in 2016 and serves to connect NGOs with enterprises that wish to contribute to charitable causes. This year, we have focused on bringing together high quality teachers and impoverished rural schools suffering from a dearth of qualified teachers. We hope to bring together more charitably-minded enterprises and individuals with charitable organisations. By doing so, the BEA Charity Fund has become a powerful unifying force and coordinator, allowing us to help more people.
